The Operating Environment

The conditions surrounding vape detectors are critical in ensuring its accuracy and range. Since vape detectors function primarily by detecting and reporting microscopic particulates emitted by vapes, vape detectors work best in areas where those particulates have the capability of reaching the device. To achieve optimal results and improve accuracy from your vape detectors, we recommend paying special attention to these factors in the locations where the vape detectors are installed.

Low Airflow

The speed, direction, and volume of airflow in a room affects vape’s ability to reach the sensor. It is recommended to operate your vape detectors in a room with low airflow (no open windows, ventilation fans blowing low, etc.).

Room Volume

When someone vapes, the particulates in the vapor expand continuously throughout the room. The closer someone is to the vape detector, the easier it is for the device to distinguish between vape particulates and other air particulates. Vape detectors will be more accurate in smaller rooms, even if the vaping is vaping from further away.

Aerosols

Vape detectors rely on particulate-based detection systems. Introducing aerosols such as spray cleaner or air fresheners can interfere with the sensor and lead to false positives. Ensure that any aerosols sprayed are after school hours.

Distance From Sensor

The closer vape is emitted to a vape detector, the more confident and accurate the results will

be. Vape emitted in large rooms far from the sensor has the chance of thinning out before the particulates reach the sensor. Vape detectors are most accurate within a 7 foot radius. For small to medium size bathrooms (no larger than 15′ x 15′) one vape detector is normally enough. For larger sized bathrooms, we recommend two detectors.

Ceiling Height

It is recommended to install your vape detectors flush with the ceiling and in ceilings not exceeding nine feet. Since particles disperse as time goes on, the distance from the floor to the ceiling can have an impact on accuracy and sensitivity.
